   It's GIVING TUESDAY, and I'm asking folks for help today, and for donations made to Honor our beautiful Warrior.
He is running free in heaven, and my heart is in a billion teeny, tiny pieces. I love this photo of Warrior and Misty, as their time together was so very precious for both of them. Sadly, there is never enough time to grieve, and I still need to raise funds to pay for the hay deliveries in NV and WA. The total will be approximately $2500, although it could be as high as $3000. The WA number is $1500. Our vet bill is still in the thousands, and we have 5 more kittens to get altered. 3 of the older kittens went to an amazing new home, and Mama Donk and baby were adopted. The 2 mustang mares and the baby have also been adopted. So things are going well, (not including the loss of Warrior.) But he is pain free and flying high. WARRIOR needs you one last time. Dakota, the wild mustang stallion, also needs your help now.11/21/2023    Warrior's FINAL update.
As I write this, the tears are falling so fast I can barely see the screen. I have that ball in my throat and can barely breathe. I don't know how to do this. It hurts too much, but I love him more. Doc is coming today to set our beautiful boy free from all the pain and suffering he is going through. I promised him I'd fight until he chose not to fight anymore. Both vets agree it is not only the right thing to do, but the kindest thing possible for him. I NEED ABOUT $800 - $1000 dollars to have it done on site, and to get him buried. It would be cheaper to drop him off, have him put down in a field and buried at that spot, but I WILL NOT leave him. He is NOT going through the trauma of being loaded and not know where he is going or what is happening. He will be loaded one last time in the shoot, (he is there now having his breakfast), will have lots of loves and scratches, have one last "just a little bug bite" poke from a needle and travel with the Angels to Heaven. I don't regret one moment I spent with him. We spent hours together with him in the chute, loving on him, brushing him and just hanging out, so he had a lot of good loving. It was his "safe place". He spent so much time with Misty and knew a lot of love, in his time here at Chilly Pepper. I spent 6 months, 24/7 with Honey Bandit, and was absolutely prepared to do that with Warrior. However, as pretty as his face is, the inside is not healing, and he is suffering. He told me very clearly that he is DONE! It will cost extra as we will have to remove all the fencing to get him out and load his body to be taken to be buried, and then replace the pens. He deserves that, even though I know he won't be in his body, and will be running free through heaven's pastures. We still have not covered the new stallion's costs, and I desperately need to buy hay in WA and NV. I know I could use the extra money it will cost for Warrior, for hay instead, and take him to landfill, but that is not an option I can do. Please help me get our precious boy buried and also buy hay and do right by our new guy, Dakota. I received an urgent call to step up and keep this young stallion off the slaughter truck! Chily Pepper is the only thing between him and the kill buyer. PLEASE HELP SAVE HIM! (I have no photos as of yet.) As always, we will need funds for bail, transportation, vetting, feed etc. The goats all are surviving so far. THANK YOU FOR SAVING THEM Their injuries were serious, and they needed shots and meds daily. Thx to the folks in NV. WARRIOR NEEDS HELP! He is hanging in there so far, and we are going through the clay like crazy. Sadly he is still a long ways from out of the woods, but enjoying his scratches and loves every day. It is clear that there is some brain damage, but as of yet, it is too soon to tell how much, or if he will be ok. We need funds for more clay, alfalfa pellets, Omolene 300 and Misty would like some too, please! We are extremely short on funds, and need hay again in WA and NV. As of right now, there are 15 horses in NV, (with most of them being permanent residents.) However, there are several adoptions pending. Truck broke down again when the kids were being delivered to NV and Idaho. God blessed us with everyone delivered and breakdown in a safe area. Sadly, we still incurred additional towing costs, and now it needs to get back to the shop. Vet Bill is climbing!! We were able to spay and neuter 6 cats/kittens so far. Now, we need to do another 5 asap . With shots, food, meds and cat litter, the costs are great. The good news is that by altering these kitties, we are preventing thousands and thousands of new, unwanted cats from being born. I know y'all get tired of the constant 911's, but THAT IS WHAT I DO! Another Equine Rescue "AND MORE!!" situation. These precious goats were very badly injured last night by a pack of dogs. Their ONLY chance is YOU, my Chilly Pepper Family. They have been turned over to the rescue as their alternative was suffering and a slow and painful death. Again, I REACHED OUT IN FAITH and said YES. We got our new arrivals today. Faith and her baby Gage arrived this morning.
It must be something in the water, because Faith also has an injury to her face. I guess things run in three's. It is clear she was bitten in the face. She stinks to high heaven, her face is infected and the tooth on the bottom punctured all the way through. So she got her antibiotics, tetanus and clay right away. She is the biggest sweetheart, is not actually wild, but was apparently a "drop off". She was not helpful when they were bringing in the herds, as she would go in the opposite direction and take the herd with her. Warrior is still ooozing some pus, and was not cooperative today in any way. We finally got through what he and I needed to do, but it was definitely not one of his "good days". We did end on a good note with lots of loving. Please keep all of them in your prayers. We did get the matching funds, so we were able to pay for some hay in WA and NV, and get these horses' bail paid and transported to Chilly Pepper. Some of the pictures are graphic. What we are dealing with is beyond horrific. However, this young horse acts like he is all that, never mopes around, and is enjoying hanging out with his friends. It is still a life-threatening injury. You can clearly see the improvement. I apologize if it upsets anyone. Believe me it's not easy treating him every day. I am just sharing how serious his injuries are. We are back in WA, and Doc came out to see him. I love our vets, and they are, and have been since day one, on the exact same page about his treatment. Warrior is healing wonderfully on the outside. He is also still suffering from a great deal of trauma inside. I pulled out the piece of bone shown above a day or two ago. The funds raised in the gofundme and other donations were amazing, but they are long spent, and it didn't begin to cover his medical. They basically covered getting him to NV, me paying the folks who ran the rescue in WA while I was in NV, and to get us home safely to WA. We barely touched the vet bills, and he already has another one up here. The GOOD NEWS is that Doc was pretty ecstatic about the way his head looks, especially considering the way it looked in the beginning. He has been on constant medication, and the stuff he is on now is about $300 a bottle, and we are on the 2nd one already. He is also on another antibiotic, probiotics, good feed etc. He still cannot eat grain, and we believe it is because of an injury on the side of his jaw, so I soak them 1st, and then he can eat it just fine. i need to keep him on the antibiotics until I quit getting chunks of bone out of his head. There is so much infection. Somedays it is so heartbreaking as more and more pus comes from new and various areas. It's a rollercoaster for sure, and sometimes it just seems like it's too hard. Doc said don't change anything and keep doing exactly what I have been. She also said the fact that pus is NOT coming out of his nostrils is a very good sign as well, So far he is a miracle, and I am praying he keeps it up. There are times when he doesn't seem to know where he is or what he is doing. Hopefully the swelling by his brain will go away and he will be ok. He is a long way from out of the woods, but we are Better than 50/50 now. PTL! We need more hay in NV and WA, and I came home to 2 more horses who were dumped right before winter. There are so many behind the scenes costs that all rescues face. Brand Inspections, health certificates, and yes, he needed a second one. The utilities, the fuel, the supplies, the costs for rescue are endless and so expensive. Update. Yesterday, Doc came out again. And YET AGAIN!
Yesterday, we finally got an x-ray. Doc was also able to yank out some pieces of bone that were dying and coming to the surface. It didn't hurt Warrior, but it did my heart, just a bit. The good news is that is skull was not caved in. Some of the bad news is that he has a pocket of pus above his eye, just in front of his brain. Could that be the reason he went all goofy on me? Pressure on the brain can easily cause that. For those of you that don't know, I had a situation where he kind of had me pinned in a corner. I was calm, but absolutely aware that any action on his part could have killed me. I screwed up and thought just because we did the same thing every single day since he got here, that something couldn't change. I was trapped in the corner and dealing with a completely different horse. It was like he wasn't even there. His eyes were empty and something was definitely wrong. Thankfully, God was protecting me and I got out of the situation. Never in my life have I seen a horse do exactly that, but it was a lesson well learned. By the end of treatment he was relaxed and we were back in a good space. So many things could happen here. We don't know if his bone will heal completely. If his bone dies, so does he. Will the infection spread to his brain? We hope not, but that spot seemed to be putting pressure on his brain. (We are treating that with the clay and the infection is slowly draining, which alleviates the swelling and pressure). As swelling goes down, I keep finding new areas of injury. He has a spot on the side of his face, close to his teeth that is swollen, feels very broken and is extremely painful to the touch. Will all his dead pieces of bone come to the surface, or will they get locked inside, building up infection? Will he spook and hit is head, smashing it open? He is so compromised from his injury, his head will always be so vulnerable. The scenarios are endless, and I'm pretty sure that is why Doc said he still has about a 50/50 chance of making it, maybe a tiny bit more? He said the fact that he is still eating is big. He said he didn't want to give him less than 50/50 because he has made it so far. "Just keep doing what you are doing", is what he told me. So right now it's just "today". I take care of him, spend lots of time with him and we go through our routine. He definitely has some healing going on. Will he live? We have absolutely no idea. I will fight with him until he says no. But he is AMAZING, and I am so in love with him. The vet bill is $1400 prior to the ranch call and the x-rays yesterday. All Warrior wants me to do is hang out and scratch him and talk to him. That is when he is the most relaxed. It's funny, but loose in the chute is where he is the most confident, and that's where we hang out. Thank you to everyone who has stepped up to help him. Doc removed the dying flap of skin, but we are still at about the same odds of survival. He has so much exposed bone, and still has some infection. He is on so many meds, and is starting to get frustrated. Sadly his "I'm Mad," is striking at me with his front foot. 99% of the time he is perfectly mannered, but yesterday was extremely hard on him. I need lots more financial help. I do NOT get paid to do this. But the RESCUE needs more hep. His vet bill to date is well over a $1000 with the meds etc. I spent an additional $90+ yesterday just on needles and syringes. I ordered that load of hay in the photo, and it was over $900 and won't even last 2 months. The news is NOT GOOD. We have a little better than 50/50 chance of him surviving. Note the TOP PHOTO. He is just chilling while I flush his wounds. He laid his head against the panel, closed his eyes and just relaxed into it. HE IS A BABY, a 3 year old. This is so wrong, and the fact that he has experienced this much horror in less than 3 years is horrific. He is getting so much love and is definitely fighting to be here. I have to give him shots everyday as well as other meds. I have to flush out the infection every day and treat the injuries, as well. It will be 6 months before he has healed, if he gets that lucky. (Thank you to the folks who live here at Chilly Pepper for being so amazing as always.) This is a labor intensive fight for his life. I had to take down the photos I posted that were really graphic. When I saw his picture and asked his name, he told me "Warrior". I thought that "Alayla" was better suited to be a Mare's name, but I should have listened, because 'SHE IS A HE" Warrior has an extremely bad injury to his skull. 4 wild mustang babies AND 5 MORE newborn kittens. Luckily the kittens came with a wild, untouchable Mama, so only the first batch of kittens still need KMR (kitten milk replacer). Yesterday I caught one of the local, wild, kittens that moved in, and got her vetted and spayed. One down, 11 to go. So I definitely need help with the Vet Bill. We are also rescuing a blind rooster and another kitten tomorrow. We are in need of more KMR, Alfalfa and funds to cover all the other meds and expenses. Doc just came and we had the 4 new mustang babies vet checked and their blood drawn so they can get adopted. As you can see by the above photots, TONKA is doing awesome. Seems like the calls never stop. Another one tonight. I have until tomorrow afternoon to let them know if we can save the babies. I was not offered any of the mares, and am told that these babies are weanlings and of age to be off Mama. This is an extremely time sensitive situation. The other option for them is not one any of us want to think about. There are other buyers willing and waiting to purchase these beautiful babies. If you have never heard of "tripping" in the hidden rodeos, you are very fortunate. When you drive by a rodeo ground and there are tarps as high as you can see, well it is pretty horrible what is happening inside. "Tripping" is when the whole "sport" is to rope a wild horse's legs and feet and "trip it". You can only imagine how many broken legs, shoulders, backs etc. happen in this so called "sport". So I am extremely grateful to have a chance to save these beautiful babies. (No, I haven't seen them, but they are ALL beautiful to me.) Sadly, since the "so called rescue" that paid the catcher to steal the newborns, bragged about how much they paid for them, ALL the prices have gone up. However, I would rather pay a legit person a legit price for an unharmed, NOT STOLEN baby any day. So we need to raise a bit more than before. I want to say THANK YOU! for saving Misty. I am pretty sure someone shot her in the head. I have not had any xrays done, and it wouldn't matter anyway. She just has this perfect little hole in her head, and it reminds me of a few of the ones I rehabbed that had been shot. Regardless, that is why her eye, the right side of her face and the area below the "injury" were so huge. I had to drain it, clean it and pack it in clay. Thankfully the clay did its job, and as you can see in the photos, she is feeling MUCH BETTER. These infected injuries can cause sepsis and be deadly for these horses. She is definitely not out of the woods yet, especially with her overall condition, but her EYES ARE BRIGHT! and although you can't touch her, and she did kick and bite a bit, she is gonna be a Mama's girl. She is already following me everywhere. i did have a tiny bit of trauma for me (LOL). For the first time in treating over 100+ of infections like these, she shook her head and got it all over me. It was so disgusting, but she feels so much better I can live with it. She kept shaking her head because so much gunk would fly out. With every bit of pus and blood coming out, she felt SO MUCH BETTER! But back to the babies. Will you help me save them? Our beautiful girl is home, but man is she in rough shape. My heart broke watching her come off the trailer. She is extremely thin, nearly emaciated. She has an injury above her eye that is draining, causing her to have swelling above her eye. She is covered in bite marks and just a very sad, broken little girl. She does not trust, and you can tell she probably wants to. You can also tell she has not had anyone treat her softly and with any kind of affection. Now the work begins. Please say a prayer for her and if you can sponsor a bale of Alfalfa in WA for her, that would be amazing. She will need to be seen by Doc, and obviously will need alot of groceries and supplements. The calls for help keep coming. I received a call early this week for Ava. She is precious and needs our help. She needs Milk Pellets and lots of good groceries, but seems to be feeling pretty well. Her legs were a little bit sore, but she moves like a dream. Torch has some minor injuries to his face and legs, but also seems to be doing well. Any help for groceries is much appreciated. Doc is schedule to come out and do the blood work and Torch will also need gelded. I will be posting both babies when they are available for adoption. Daphnee, Delilah, and Shayla need your help. As you can see in the photo, Daphnee is really struggling. Being the amazing Mama that she is, ALL she has is going to her baby. Delilah is doing much better, because she is nursing like crazy and sucking out all of Mama's nutrition. Since Mama was starving while preggers, Delilah needs to catch up. However, this means Mama needs special groceries and lots of them. This is why we need to purchase the Alfalfa and also special grain for Mama and Baby!! Shayla was letting Delilah nurse off of her as well, and this may very well be why Delilah was able to survive when Mama was so emaciated. However, she is now in the pen next to Mama and baby so Delilah can no longer nurse on her as she is quite heavily pregnant. She is once again bagging up for her own baby, and the girls say she is definitely pregnant in a big way. She also needs extra feed and lots of it. Once again this is why we really need to get the Alfalfa and grain for our beautiful Mama's. We want Shayla to have a healthy baby and be able to provide the necessary milk for her own little one. Our permanent kids don't require rich feed. Our oldies are all fat and happy and Doc said you can't even tell they are old. The hay we have works perfectly for them but is not great for nursing Mama's I will be heading down as soon as I can to get them vetted and their Coggins drawn. In December 2016, Chilly Pepper brought home Anika and Midnight Onyx, two blind horses from the ISPMB rescue. This rescue was where I personally sorted 907 wild horses in -40 degree, blizzards. Thankfully with some amazing folks on my team helping to make this happen. Our good friend Terri Recknor Elliott stepped up and has been sponsoring them both since 2017. (She has been a long term supporter and great friend for the last 10 years as well.) In addition to showing nonstop love and support for Chilly Pepper, she is always trying to help raise funds for the rescue, as well as helping me try to manage my chronic pain. Terri recently launched a pet wellness company and she sent me a sample of “Essential OMEGAS and Cellular BOOST”, two products to improve your pet’s health. As always, I needed to test them myself before I give them to any of my critters. These formulas are the same for humans, so I had nothing to lose. We are about HALFWAY to being able to get them home safely. A WONDERFUL donor offered to match up to $1000, starting with anything donated after she called. That was July 5 at 2 p.m. SO YOUR MONEY IS WORTH TWICE AS MUCH! When we get to the $1000 and she matches it, the GIRLS & BABY WILL BE SAFE! PLEASE, Let's GIT 'ER DONE! Mama is NOT being listed or offered to anyone else, and we are Her Only Chance!! (Baby won't ship with Mama), but they NEED to stay together. Mama is emaciated. If you look closely you can see her ribs. Her topline is horrible and her hips are sunken. I will post better photos later. You can see baby looks bad as well. I need to raise $4000 to help purchase, transport for vetting and then get them home. When I drove to NV to set up a chute to get the last wild mares, and the pregnant donks vetted, the bill for the Coggins and Health Certs was $636, just to get blood drawn so we could legally transport them. IF we don't save the mares, they will ship on Saturday. I HAVE to say yes by Friday evening to save them. I would love to celebrate my birthday tomorrow knowing we will save them!! The beautiful wild mares, (one Pregnant and the other with her baby on her side), are at their new home with Jennifer Nelson at Mystic Meadows. She is an amazing lady that we are very fortunate to work with. "Tequila", the Pregnant, wild Jenny shown here, is also adopted. We have a pretty urgent need to finish perimeter fencing around the horse area. My friend who lives about 5 minutes away, recently watched our local "Cinnamon Bear" finish devouring a fawn he had killed. This brought back memories of the Wild Horse Sanctuary. Although more of the babies were killed by the Mountain Lions than the bears, we did see bears eating the foals and deceased horses. Although it is not necessarily common, if you don't think it happens, simply google it, and we know for sure this guy is a carnivore. (I believe it is the same one I saw before. He looked old and in rough shape.) On that note, It is important to have the LGD (Livestock guardian dogs, running the fence line.) This will help ensure that our beautiful bear goes around, and doesn't stop to snack on the mini's, goats or other small critters. It's also "go time" AGAIN, to purchase hay in NV for the 11 residents there. The hay will be around $1800? and it is about $5000 for the "no climb" horse fencing I need, not including the T-Posts.
