There are so many emergencies, but THIS IS BEYOND AN EMERGENCY. The babies have been dying left and right, and we need to know right now if folks are going to step up and help us save them. It's hard to know where to start. I was contacted and asked if Chilly Pepper will take on these fragile foals. However, due to the extremely dangerous conditions the folks are catching in, the price is $300. (We pay more than that for horses all the time), but there could be up to 16? or MORE???? coming in by tomorrow. So just for bail I would need $4800. Each baby will take a minimum of $300 in milk powder the first month, and that does not include anything. So milk powder alone will be close to $5,000. and that is just the start. I HAD TO COMMIT to the newborns strictly on FAITH!! But after 11 of the first 12 we were on stand by for died, I cannot in good conscience say no. So I have committed to another 4 that will be here shortly. But if folks want us to have a chance to save the other 10 they have seen stranded in the snow, with their starving families and moms with no milk, we have to raise enough funds and quickly. IF they bring another 10 tomorrow, that is $3000 we have to have, or the babies won't survive. Again, we pay more than that for a horse/baby all the time. It is just so scary when they are coming all at once. So I need folks to step up now and let me know if we should try and save the 10 tomorrow, and I need desperately for folks to help us purchase, vet and take care of the ones we will have tonight. It is so hard to have to keep asking for help, but we simply cannot do this without y'all. Yesterday I was called to help a mare that was tangled in barbed wire. I went with another guy who had also been asked to help. He and his buddy went ahead of me, and I got all the medical supplies. The biggest heartbreak was that she was so starved it was worth fighting a barbed wire fence to try and find food that SIMPLY DOES NOT EXIST OUT THERE. Her injuries were not the worst of it. She lay for too long in the freezing snow and ice, and it was too much for her. So she had to be "dispatched". We have never ever had to deal with a situation like this. So I need to know, do I say YES for tomorrow? At this point I cannot risk anymore funds than I already have tonight. We are getting into hay money, but I can't let two new babies freeze to death when I know that y'all are so amazing and would want to save them. So Please Donate Generously. As always, I do this for free, but the babies need money for feed, care and vetting, not to mention getting them to safety. I leave this in your hands, and am praying we can save the others that are stranded out there.. Cinderella, shown above, was rescued from a very likely snowy grave. She is here now and receiving the care she needs. PLEASE HELP NOW! Below you can clearly see how much snow is around. It is covering many of the barbed wire fences, and that shows not only how deep it is, but one of the reasons these rescues are so dangerous. The emergency call came in a few hours ago. So now I am packing the truck and trailer and we are heading to WA tomorrow. COPPER'S CHANCE arrived at Mama Mel's Urgent Care Nursery, (our satellite facility in Toppenish, WA) just about the time I received the call. Matt and I were on a supply run, so now that we are finally home, we are loading everything and heading out tomorrow. COPPER'S CHANCE is truly a miracle. Out of the 12 babies that were spotted stuck in the snow with their bands, 9 or more have passed from the brutal conditions. The status of the other 2 babies is unknown this evening, but there will be more coming home to Chilly Pepper, whether it is this trip or next week? COPPER is already a thousand dollar baby. By the time we purchase this beautiful little girl, pay the EMERGENCY VET BILL, and get there to pick her up, we will have over a thousand dollars invested in this little girl. This past year has been filled with brutal heartbreak. Cleaning up after others who neglected and abused animals is often too much. But today we have a chance to help save this baby. She is hypothermic, dehydrated and is very thin. Her poor Mama was giving her baby everything she had, and the mare may not even survive. The rescue was treacherous and dangerous, and every thing possible, is being done to help these wild horses. At least now, both mama & baby have a chance. Copper would most likely not have survived another evening, which is clear by her condition. Her mama had no milk, and needs every bit of what she has to possibly survive. This is just the beginning. We have been shopping for milk and the supplies we need, but we are far from where we need to be to "git 'er done". We know there are more babies dropping all the time, and you can see many, many, heavily pregnant mares standing in the deep snow,. We want to thank EVERYONE who has been donating and making it possible to accomplish what we have up til now. But IT IS GO TIME! These babies are going to need even more care than normal. Mama Mel is setting up in our warm, insulated nursery and will be taking care of COPPER'S CHANCE until I can get there. I should be there tomorrow evening. She is getting warm milk, being offered munchies and has received warm IV fluids, and other meds. Her journey will be a long one, but hopefully she was saved in time. THANK YOU FOR ALWAYS BEING THERE FOR THESE HORSES! YOU HAVE SAVED SO MANY! PLEASE LET'S CONTINUE THIS AMAZING, LIFE SAVING JOURNEY TOGETHER! PLEASE donate now & save another life! We were hoping to have a bit more time to prepare for the babies, but we received an urgent call regarding the babies in WA. Many of the locals near Mama Mel's Urgent Care Nursery (our satellite in Toppenish WA), have reported more than one group of horses stranded in the deep snow. There are drifts over 4 feet high in places and the horses have had little to no food for weeks now. *There were AT LEAST 12 babies from newly born, up to a month in age when we got the first call.. Sadly, since the first update 2 days ago, at least 9? babies are dead, and the circling vultures tell the gruesome tail. We were told there were predators waiting in the background, and the mares are struggling to keep the birds from eating their tiny, frozen, dead, babies. Some of the babies that died appear to have Mom's who are in semi decent shape. Most likely the extreme cold took them when they lay down to rest. (We saw alot of that in SD. Babies need to lay down, and when it is that cold and they are weak, they don't have a chance.) We have been apprised that we could get foals at any time and to be ready. No matter what folks take on the long term care of the orphans, MAMA MEL'S URGENT CARE NURSERY is the first place they will go. She is the only one who is on site and can start the urgent care they need. Some of the hidden costs are as follows: Seramune Equine IgG (Colostrum replacer for $105. each). Critical babies are also given Foal Response, which is $12.69 per dose, and the Equine Coli Endotox (E Coli), and each does of that is $27.49. All these can be ordered through Valley Vet, and they are medicines most folks do not even know we need. These are just a few of the hidden costs that most people never see. I need to place an order for 10 each of the meds, and 3 bottles of Colostrum. The total is $719.65, and we need to order it asap so it arrives on time. We also have an order of other meds coming from the vet (hopefully in time), and I do not have the total cost of that yet. There are so many behind the scenes expenses. These babies will need critical care, and we need to purchase more supplies asap. We will need additional meds, more colostrum (which is $100+ a baby), milk replacer, more blankets, heaters etc. so we can even begin to start taking proper care of the babies that are expected. We have one nursery building set up, and it is very likely that we will see a large number of babies at once. So although we have a warm place for them to receive round the clock care, we will still need to finish getting all the needed supplies. I am prepping to head to WA at a moment's notice, and there are others we work with who are also prepping in case they are needed. Mama Mel's Urgent Care Nursery, is the ONLY thing standing between life and death for many of these little ones. We have been told we could possibly be receiving foals anytime (assuming they can survive) Once they are here there is no time to wait for supplies. The price for these foals will also be higher than normal as there is no way for folks to even reach them without renting snow equipment and hiring larger crews to help. There is no guarantee that this group of horses can even be accessed. Worst case scenario, no one will get saved? There is little to no chance the babies will continue to survive standing out in the freezing weather in snow that is often up to chest level on the adult horses. Mom's have very little milk, and there is no way to keep the little ones warm. We may not get orphans tonight, it could be tomorrow, the next day or next week. The bottom line is that we have to be ready the minute we are called. You have saved so many lives this last year. Funds that would have normally been used to finish setting up Mel's have gone instead to save more lives. But I know that was part of God's plans, and now it is "that time again". Baby season is here and they need our help. PLEASE NOTE: Our paypal is [email protected]. The old account was closed, so we would really appreciate y'all using this one, especially for your monthly donations. You all are amazing. Thank You for being part of Chilly Pepper and for being part of our 2019 journey to keep saving lives. |
