Update. Yesterday, Doc came out again. And YET AGAIN!
Yesterday, we finally got an x-ray. Doc was also able to yank out some pieces of bone that were dying and coming to the surface. It didn't hurt Warrior, but it did my heart, just a bit. The good news is that is skull was not caved in. Some of the bad news is that he has a pocket of pus above his eye, just in front of his brain. Could that be the reason he went all goofy on me? Pressure on the brain can easily cause that. For those of you that don't know, I had a situation where he kind of had me pinned in a corner. I was calm, but absolutely aware that any action on his part could have killed me. I screwed up and thought just because we did the same thing every single day since he got here, that something couldn't change. I was trapped in the corner and dealing with a completely different horse. It was like he wasn't even there. His eyes were empty and something was definitely wrong. Thankfully, God was protecting me and I got out of the situation. Never in my life have I seen a horse do exactly that, but it was a lesson well learned. By the end of treatment he was relaxed and we were back in a good space. So many things could happen here. We don't know if his bone will heal completely. If his bone dies, so does he. Will the infection spread to his brain? We hope not, but that spot seemed to be putting pressure on his brain. (We are treating that with the clay and the infection is slowly draining, which alleviates the swelling and pressure). As swelling goes down, I keep finding new areas of injury. He has a spot on the side of his face, close to his teeth that is swollen, feels very broken and is extremely painful to the touch. Will all his dead pieces of bone come to the surface, or will they get locked inside, building up infection? Will he spook and hit is head, smashing it open? He is so compromised from his injury, his head will always be so vulnerable. The scenarios are endless, and I'm pretty sure that is why Doc said he still has about a 50/50 chance of making it, maybe a tiny bit more? He said the fact that he is still eating is big. He said he didn't want to give him less than 50/50 because he has made it so far. "Just keep doing what you are doing", is what he told me. So right now it's just "today". I take care of him, spend lots of time with him and we go through our routine. He definitely has some healing going on. Will he live? We have absolutely no idea. I will fight with him until he says no. But he is AMAZING, and I am so in love with him. The vet bill is $1400 prior to the ranch call and the x-rays yesterday. All Warrior wants me to do is hang out and scratch him and talk to him. That is when he is the most relaxed. It's funny, but loose in the chute is where he is the most confident, and that's where we hang out. Thank you to everyone who has stepped up to help him. We need lots of prayers, as well as funds for the everyday costs of doing what we do. THANK YOU for saving him and giving him a chance. I know for sure, no matter what happens, he is getting so much love and is so obviously enjoying being loved. Quick Update. Yesterday, Doc came out again. Doc removed the dying flap of skin, but we are still at about the same odds of survival. He has so much exposed bone, and still has some infection. He is on so many meds, and is starting to get frustrated. Sadly his "I'm Mad," is striking at me with his front foot. 99% of the time he is perfectly mannered, but yesterday was extremely hard on him. I need lots more financial help. I do NOT get paid to do this. But the RESCUE needs more hep. His vet bill to date is well over a $1000 with the meds etc. I spent an additional $90+ yesterday just on needles and syringes. I ordered that load of hay in the photo, and it was over $900 and won't even last 2 months. If you want to see a beautiful video, depicting his normal state of mind, go to: https://youtube.com/shorts/W01e6doWWDo With today's economy and the skyrocketing fuel prices, I am starting to wonder if rescue as we know it, is going to end. I can't do it without the funds.. We had lots of wonderful donations for him, but I don't even think we have covered his expenses so far. Sadly the hay wasn't free either, lol. If we can't support something as life threatening as this, maybe the economy has taken it's toll. I get it, the world has gone crazy, but it makes it hard to say "yes", if we can't cover the actual rescue and all the other stuff that goes with it, like feed, farrier care, electricity, truck maintenance etc. There is so much more than just getting a horse "safe". I'm really struggling physically, and maybe this is God's way of letting me know it's time to slow way down. I got Warrior on faith, and God came through like always. Just not sure what His plan is. I so appreciate every penny that has been donated, but if this is what rescue is going to be like, I simply won't be able to afford to step up for these beautiful horses. Please help so I can pay my the folks caring for the horses and critters, in WA, pay his vet bills, buy hay, milk, supplies and all the other items we need for Misty and the others.. Right now HE WANTS to fight, so I will fight. But i cannot do it without your help. If you ask questions on facebook or messenger, you may not get an immediate answer. I am spending most of my time with him and taking care of the rescue. I will keep you updated as much as I can , but HE and his care, are my priority right now. Please donate to help with his vetting, and ongoing care. We spent over $4000 to get him bailed, transported and for me to get to NV. I also brought 2 of our rescued kids down to NV that were picked up by their adopter, but still had to fork out the fuel money. Normally we would save on the transport by either going myself, or sharing space on a trailer. However, due to the emergent need in this situation, the right decision for Warrior to get here as soon and safely as possible was made. I appreciate any help and especially prayers for this beautiful soul. Quick Update. Yesterday, Doc & I had time to really assess Warrior's condition. The news is NOT GOOD. We have a little better than 50/50 chance of him surviving. Note the TOP PHOTO. He is just chilling while I flush his wounds. He laid his head against the panel, closed his eyes and just relaxed into it. HE IS A BABY, a 3 year old. This is so wrong, and the fact that he has experienced this much horror in less than 3 years is horrific. He is getting so much love and is definitely fighting to be here. I have to give him shots everyday as well as other meds. I have to flush out the infection every day and treat the injuries, as well. It will be 6 months before he has healed, if he gets that lucky. (Thank you to the folks who live here at Chilly Pepper for being so amazing as always.) This is a labor intensive fight for his life. I had to take down the photos I posted that were really graphic. I know there are folks who would not have been ok seeing the reality. I wanted to leave them up, because it is the reality, and we need help!! Please help so I can pay my the folks caring for the horses and critters, in WA, pay his vet bills, buy hay, milk, supplies and all the other items we need for Misty and the others.. In the small photo, you can see the jagged edge of one of the broken bones. There is a huge hole behind it. This is beyond brutal. Most of his skin is coming off his face. He is fighting infection and I NEED YOUR HELP! I need to stay longer in NV with him. He needs mass amounts of medications and I need to buy hay for the kids down here. Right now HE WANTS to fight, so I will fight. But i cannot do it without your help. If you ask questions on facebook or messenger, you may not get an immediate answer. IF YOU WANT TO SEE HIM IN REAL LIFE, COPY AND PASTE THE LINK BELOW. You will fall in love with this precious soul. I stayed with him awhile because he was enjoying our time. He was so relaxed he actually fell asleep. I imagine he didn't get much rest on that long trailer ride. It helped immensely for doctoring him that evening. https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fyoutube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D3bqJtpW_9d8%26feature%3Dshared%26fbclid%3DIwAR1NmA4F0rPpXdHWUOo1hkKvzg71dkAQ_o6HdquXobLHMHc_x7YdpvgUt9Q&h=AT0tzzLOJ_JShxtDf7FgMuujXL-ArYV6kVBQxstzjyvZTOvGo0xTJzZlz4iWiuQZJWWEWmPNulVGYDQn8-zwsXE5DvUDg9xBmWbC9eMlvIc7l2m_k9UIpVdDrGP4Cj1ro1g6vD54OuBHIoPXYtY Please donate to help with his vetting, and ongoing care. WARRIOR aka Alayla, has finally arrived in NV. When I saw his picture and asked his name, he told me "Warrior". I thought that "Alayla" was better suited to be a Mare's name, but I should have listened, because 'SHE IS A HE" Warrior has an extremely bad injury to his skull. It is broken and there is a big chunk missing. Doc put him on antibiotics and we cleaned and doctored him up. However, you can only do so much to a wild horse that has just stepped off a trailer after a 3 day ride. Tomorrow we should know alot more about his injury. He desperately needed to be able to relax and settle in. All of this can be extremely stressful for a wild, badly injured, mustang. However, as it always seems to happen, they KNOW YOU ARE HELPING, and he stood, un-squeezed in the chute. He could have move away, but everything I did was on his terms. He even reached out to "kiss me". I have to say it was scary, because I knew he was either getting reassurance or going to bite half my face off. Luckily it was just for reassurance.
