Hi ya'll,
Just a quick update on our boy. Honey Bandit loves the snow. He will bury his face up to his eyeballs and 'plow" around the yard. Of course he stops doing that when I get out there with the video. He and DaBubbles and Patches buck and kick and seem to think that the snow was dropped just for their fun. His new blanket is a little bit too large, so I kind of "git er done'd" it. ha ha. I used the back straps to wrap it more securely. It was completely safe and almost like he had a girth on him. So he not only got the feel of some "saddle strappage", but he was warm and toasty and there was no danger of the little guys getting their legs caught in the straps. The last time I put a new blanket on him and used the back leg straps, Patches had reared up and caught both front feet about 4 times in the first five minutes. Of course you know what that means....... no back straps for Honey Bandit. I am so grateful that we got to go to D.C., and am extremely happy about the results of that trip. We had some very special advocates there, but we couldn't have done it without all the footage and videos that all the people out in the field are compiling, nor without the financial help and loans to cover that trip. Now the next step is Phoenix, at the BLM Advisory Board Meetings. We appreciate any help ya'll can come up with. If you think that this is important, please support this. I am asking for the horses. We are making a difference. No one (besides God) can move a mountain in one day. However, we are making the first of many baby steps. We can move the mountain, one rock at a time, one step at a time. But we cannot do it alone. Whether you are 'hands on" taking care of a horse, or helping by donation of time and/or money, we need you. This is definitely the crucial time for all of us. Honey Bandit's story is not about a "cute little pony". It is about improper use of millions of tax dollars, inhumane treatment of animals, whether it be intentional or not. HONEY BANDIT is there to always remind us of all the other foals and horses that died and might be forgotten. Honey Bandit is making sure they are not forgotten. His story is powerful enough that he made congress sit up and listen, and it needs to continue to be told. Sooooooo, next thing is funding the trip to Phoenix. Anyone who is able should join us all there. There will be a candle light vigil to remember all of our lost and fallen horses, and this is a huge chance to show everyone that we are serious and we want change. The American public does not want to keep throwing away their tax dollars and injuring/destroying our national heritage - our wild horses. So show Honey Bandit his story matters. Support us in any way you can. Thank you so much for everyone who has brought him this far. God Bless. Hi ya'll. I guess we are making baby steps in the fight to stop the roundups. Although BLM's decision to still round up the 7600 horses a year is not what we want, we have to be glad that at least there are 2400 who get a chance to live at least a year longer. Doesn't sound like much in some ways, but every horse we save is a victory, at least for that horse. We are starting to make a difference and we need to keep this in the public eye, each and every day. We can't let it get swept under the rug.
Honey Bandit and all the lost horses he represents should be the conversation at every dinner table in America. Everyone should be contacting their representatives to let them know we want change. Obviously people are doing this, and it does make a difference, as there has been a lot of rumbling in congress about issues with the BLM. But the members of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus told us they need EVERYONE to contact them. But every single baby step we are taking is making a difference. I would like to thank everyone out in the field taking these videos and pictures, because that, along with HB's story, really got everyone's attention in DC. We need to make sure that everyone else in America sees the information and what the reality is. So many people don't even know what is going on. Very few people at the tv station knew about the roundups and they were horrified at what happens. We have a step forward from BLM. I hope and pray that we can actually make some really good changes from this starting point. If they are going to be willing to work with us, then we should be ready. We need to stop thinking about what we can't change, what is already done, and start thinking about what we can change. I want to work with BLM, so when a foal drops or is at risk, we get that foal the very same day. I know that I have notified Litchfield that we will drop everything and come no matter what time day or night if there is a foal that needs to be picked up. I also know that we all hate what happened to Honey Bandit, but I will be eternally grateful that I was given the chance to take care of him. If BLM hadn't given us Honey Bandit, he would have died, so although mistakes were made, the decision on that day was a good one and it saved his life. God bless all of you for all your hard work. There are so many amazing people out there saving these horses. It is an honor to work with ya'll. Thank you for your continued support. Without you we can't do it. www.chillypepper.weebly.com Chilly Pepper - Miracle Mustang 30027 State Hwy 44 East Shingletown, CA 96088 530 474 5197 530 339 145 BLM announces changes to wild horse roundups http://www.redding.com/news/2011/feb/24/blm-announces-changes-wild-horse-roundups/ Sorry we haven't had a Honey Bandit update, but he was busy raising money for the five pregnant mares in Fallon that were headed to slaughter. We have to say it was absolutely a raging success. Honey Bandit's friends raised over $1500 for those mares. How can we say thank you? Everyone who sent money for those mares, spread the word, or said their prayers - YOU ROCK!
We have been on the phone constantly for the past two days, answering the constant flow of calls regarding these mares. Jennifer was fielding emails for me while I waited for the replacement computer. But so many people came through to save these mares. It makes you believe in the human race for a brief second. Actually, we have seen nothing but love for the horses from most of the people we know. Wish we could raise money like that all the time. :) But I guess this was the perfect time, and the perfect reason. I did get several calls about other horses in trouble, and it is so frustrating that we can't save them all. But having a mare slaughtered and her baby tossed in a pile was too much for people to think about, and they didn't just "blog about it", they "got er done". Just think if every single person that 'blogs' about or writes about the horses and how awful it is, actually physically did something about it. If every person sent $5 to a rescue, or went and volunteered, even one time, what a difference it would make. We see people (many elderly) on fixed incomes that will go without something they need to send that $5. It is amazing how people that have so little find so much to give. I am all for spreading the news, but we need to actually do something. The timing is crucial, and there are what, 40 thousand???? wild horses in captivity? How many people write about these horses every day? We could all band together and "git 'er done". I bet we could find enough people to take a couple horses, if several others would sponsor them and help support them. I truly believe we could do that. Many of the "mustang families" are small enough so people with some acreage could adopt the horses, keeping the family intact, and let them live out their lives together. All they would need would be sponsors. Just a thought from Honey Bandit.:) Well the next step is to get to tell Honey Bandit's story at the BLM meeting in Phoenix in March. We are trying to recover from the financial ramifications of our trip to DC,and even though the cost was high, the success of the trip far outweighed any financial losses. But seeing with our own eyes, the reaction by congress to the brutal truth about the roundups and the cruelty involved, we know we have to keep getting the truth out. The naked surprise and shock on their faces after seeing Honey Bandit's story is proof enough that we need to get to this meeting. The time is now. We appreciate all your help to get us to this next crucial step. The more Honey Bandit's story gets out, the more people will realize how much we need to make a change. Honey Bandit is representing all of the fallen foals, and his suffering must not have been in vain. Speaking of suffering, Honey Bandit is in his stall, covered in the warm halo of his heat lamp, munching away as we hunker down for the expected storm. It is brutally cold out for a horse with no winter coat. So the heater is going, his lamp is on, and he is knee deep in fresh straw so he can stay warm and "tozy". Guess you have to say his suffering is over.:) (But ours has just begun, as we go through much propane to keep him warm.) But he is a very happy guy. God Bless and Thank You! www.chillypepper.weebly.com Chilly Pepper - Miracle Mustang 30027 State Highway 44 East Shingletown, CA 96088 530 339-1458 HI YA'LL, FINALLY, HERE IS ALL OF THE INFO ON THESE MARES. Sorry about the vagueness of the prior message, but it was all i had to send. We DESPERATELY NEED TO GET ENOUGH FUNDS FOR THESE MARES TO BE "SPRUNG". Please, please, (HONEY BANDIT IS BEGGING YOU) send what you can. Even if it is $5.00. please do not think that it will not be enough. If we get enough people to send $5, we will be able to save these mares. I don't want to bring you down, but you can be sure the end of the foal's lives would be anything but humane after they killed their mamas. Not a way for any baby to be brought in (AND OUT) of this world.
Let's give them a chance at life. I know that many of you will want to help, and it doesn't matter if you can't actually take one. together, we can get these mares and unborn/born foals out of there and give them a chance at life. Donations will not only get them out of there, they can mean a temporary home until a permanent one is found. These mares have been "USED" to make money their whole lives. It is their turn to have someone show some compassion and heart. Please send $5 and tell em that Honey Bandit made a difference. Send it for him. GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU FOR HELPING TO SAVE THESE GIRLS. YOU ROCK. HUGS AND KISSES FROM HB !!!! P.S. I was able to borrow a computer tonight, and hopefully will have my replacement by Friday at the latest. http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/6931/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=5577 Just a quick update to let ya'll know what is going on. We got back yesterday, via a quick trip to the news station on the way home. It was wonderful to wrap my arms around Honey Bandit, although he doesn't seem to have missed me that much. What a brat. :) After all the time I put in with him, you'd think he'd have a little appreciation. :) Just kidding. He is turning into a regular horse. He isn't so dependent on his people mommy, and that is a good thing for him. However, it would have been nice if he was way excited when i got here. Guess he had his daddy and they obviously had a good time. :) What we accomplished in Washington DC is a wonderful start, but we need EVERYONE to send them email, phone calls or post cards to tell the senate to support the House of Representatives. The link above takes about 20 seconds to fill out and send. We want to ask each and every senator over and over to support the House's decision on this matter. Yesterday I let Honey Bandit, Patches and DaBubbles out for a little while when the weather let up. It is amazing to watch the three of them play. They are so different in size, yet they adjust their "bites", "kicks" and rough housing accordingly. You would think Dabubbles would be in danger of being seriously injured, being so much smaller, but that is not the case. I want to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped us get Honey Bandit's story to Washington DC. A special thanks to my friend who not only loaned us money for the airline tickets, (which were purchased at the very last minute for a not so nice price), but offered to pay half of the costs. Without her generosity and the other help we got, this trip never would have happened. The timing was so amazing. When I talked to Jennifer about the trip, she immediately said it was too late, and we could never pull it off. (our common sense girl) But, after thinking about the ramifications of what we might be able to accomplish, she changed her mind. (She is our detail diva, and this leaves me free to care for the critters). So, we once again "put on our big girl britches" and "got 'er done". What are the chances we would be able to have 3 days with the House of Representatives, and that the amendment would hit the floor on the end of that third day? Between Ginger Kathren's video and Honey Bandit's story and photos, there was some real emotion felt. From the day we got Honey Bandit, God has been guiding us step by step. For us to have even gotten him was a miracle. It seems that things are laid out in front of us, and we are just following along the path in front of us. The fact that Honey Bandit is still here today is definitely a gift from God. Ya'll saw the condition he was in. Even with all your help, I could never have pulled him through without angels from above. That was why we decided that even though financially it was crazy, we could trust that everything would be okay. This was supposed to happen, and I am eternally grateful that this little man did not go through this for nothing. HONEY BANDIT IS AMERICA'S POSTER BOY TO STOP THE ROUNDUPS - AND THAT IS BECAUSE HE IS SPEAKING FOR ALL OF THE LITTLE ONES WHO DIED BEFORE AND HAD NO VOICE. THEIR LIVES NEED TO MATTER AND BE REMEMBERED. This is Honey Bandit's mission. God bless ya'll for continuing to support him and help him get his message out. Hugs from the Gang. God Bless. www.chillypepper.weebly.com Chilly Pepper - Honey Bandit 30027 Highway 44 East Shingletown, CA 96088 530 474 5197 530 339 1458 Hi ya'll. We have great news here in Washington DC. The U.S. House has approved an amendment on a voice vote that would cut $2 million dollars from the BLM. According to Indiana Republican Dan Burton, his amendment is to send a signal to BLM that the American public wants more humane treatment for the Mustangs across the West. This means that the additional $12 million dollars that have been requested would not be available to aid with the roundups. So that is a whopping $14 million dollar savings. According to Virginia Democrat, Jim Moran, the law that was passed 40 years ago was to protect the wild horses and today there are more than 40,000 in holding pens and and only 30,000 in the wild. Advocates believe that there are even less than that still running free. This is wonderful news for wild horses that are still free. We still have a long way to go, but this was a huge step in the right direction. In other news, BLM is working with the University of California Davis on a long term (possibly 7 year) contraceptive. The University of Colorado is in competition with UC Davis to come up with the best formula for this birth control. Just think, if we can stop the roundups for a time until the proper studies are done, and the birth control is successful, the way we manage our wild horses could be changed forever. There wouldn't be a need for round-ups if the reproduction was controlled. Of course this would be based on accurate and independent studies having verified the true number of wild horses left in the wild. But this was a good trip, and a very successful one. We came to defund the round-ups, and as of today, we are half way there with the House having approved the defunding. So write to your representatives, and let's keep this ball rolling. PTL that Honey Bandit's plight did not go unnoticed. Thank you for all your support. It takes all of us and we need to keep up the momentum. Videos of the actual roundups simply are what they are. There is nothing but the truth, and it sends a very clear message. You be the judge. The video is on youtube and it was made by Ginger Kathrens for congress to encourage them to defund the round-ups. Thank you for your help and continued support. I cannot wait to wrap my arms around Honey Bandit's neck when I get home tomorrow. It has been hard being away from him, but my hubby was there to get him "unstuck" and watch over him and the rest of the family. We still need your support and thank you with all our heart. God Bless. Honey Bandit & the Gang www.chillypepper.weebly.com Chilly Pepper - Honey Bandit 30027 State Hwy 44 East Shingletown, CA 96088 530 339 1458 Congressional Appeal to Halt the Roundups (You Tube Video) Hi ya'll. Here is a link to a video made by Ginger Kathrens. It shows the simple truth of the roundups. Sometimes it is better to just watch and see what the reality is. It was a fabulous day here in DC. The sky a brilliant blue, and in spite of the chilly breezes, a simply beautiful day. The city is so different from home, and for those of you who have never experienced our capitol, it is amazing. The streets are incredibly wide, everything is beyond clean, and you will see more police officers here in one day than we see in a year. There is a feeling of boundless energy, as though everyone has somewhere vitally important to go. For the most part, people are very polite and quite friendly for being in such a large place. The buildings are simply unbelievable. So far we have not had time to "sight see", but all around us are places that draw you to them. We did get to take pictures in front of the capitol, where we were "blown away in DC". Literally my wheelchair was blown over while we were taking pictures. We are hailing cabs and blending in with the city folks, (with the exception of my boots of course - although I did wear clean ones). I laugh as I write this, as we tend to stick out like a sore thumb sometimes. But we are meeting the most wonderful people and sharing the needed information to help make a change for the future of our wild horses. Now is the perfect time to contact your representatives and senators about this issue. We are not trying to lay blame to anyone. We are simply trying to stop the roundups until we can find a better way to manage our horses. Let's find good homes for the 30,000 or so that are already rounded up. Honey Bandit's message is going strong. Honor him by contacting your government. What he has gone through should not be for nothing. My hubby is watching him while I am gone and as usual, he continues to find himself upside down and stuck in some very precarious and dangerous situations, (I mean Honey Bandit, not my husband). We have padded his stalls walls, tried larger and smaller areas, and he just seems to still have some wires crossed in his pretty little head. But that is okay. We are looking into the "rollers", but of course I need to observe him for awhile first if he is going to wear anti-cast rollers. I have heard some really good things but also some things to be concerned about. The mountain lion was in our yard again the day before I left. It is amazing how fast they are, you see a blur and they are gone. The horses were completely freaking out, running around and blowing like crazy, and the dogs were going nuts as well. So once again we remain on high alert. But that is the life of a country girl. Wow, that seems so far away right now. You would not believe how many sirens you hear. There is always something happening. We had some great meetings today, and although we have a lot of support, we are still looking for that one "champion". So now ladies and gentlemen, it is time for ya'll to help us. A lot of our law makers are waiting to see how important this issue is to their constituents. Sooooooooooooooo, get on the phone, send your emails, send your snail mail, but do it now. We need to stop this until we have the chance to figure out what to do and how to do it right p.s. For those of you who aren't aware, my leg is pretty bad, and I often have to use a wheelchair, especially if we are standing around or walking very far. God bless. Today we had meetings at the offices of Calvert, Young, Serrano, and Garamendi, in the House of Representatives. All the reps that we met with were very open to our ideas and the meetings were a great success. HONEY BANDIT ROCKED THE HOUSE! of representatives. Honey Bandit's story had quite an impact, bringing tears to the eyes of more than one person. It is amazing how many people do not realize where their tax dollars are going. You can see Ginger Kathren's video on you tube; it also had a huge impact on the people who saw it. "Many Thanks to Ginger Kathren". It is so hard to be away from the guys, but I am so glad that I have the privilege of sharing Honey Bandit's story. I sure miss hearing him whinny at me when I go to bed, and drifting off to sleep while he munches away. I know Matt is taking good care of him, and the rest of the gang, but I will be very glad to be back home again. Tomorrow is another big day. Will keep you posted. Thanks for all the support and prayers. God bless! www.chillypepper.weebly.com Chilly Pepper - Honey Bandit Miracle Mustang 30027 Highway 44 East Shingletown, CA 96088 530 339-1458 Hi from Washington D.C., Wow is it different from Shingletown. It has been crazy busy, leaving Redding last night at midnight and getting to D.C. this afternoon. Met some wonderful people on the plane who are extremely interested in helping change things. (Of course we trapped them on the plane and made them watch HB's video haha) Just kidding of course. We did watch his video several times though; it is amazing how many people have no idea that their wild horses are being rounded up. OR that their tax dollars hard at work is what pays for these roundups.
It is a good group, and after having a bite to eat, we all met up again and finished getting the informational packets ready for tomorrow. I don't think anyone got much sleep last night, so people were pretty beat, but they cowboy'ed up anyway and we "got er done". Sitting in our hotel room, (in a very very old building), we can hear someone playing (trumpet??? / clarinet????) outside. It is sort of a melancholy tune, and it really adds to the ambiance, especially after seeing the big cities on t.v. Am struggling to keep my eyelids open. Talked to everyone at home, and they are all doing well. It is so weird not to hear HB munching away, and instead hear cars driving by. Man am I glad I get to hear him and not this every night. The music is nice, but everywhere there is cement and apartment buildings. Tomorrow begins bright and early, and is going to be a big day. We will be presenting factual information regarding the reality of this type of "herd management", and discussing the results of their choices. Brogan, Cinnamon, Jennifer, Leslie, Carla, and John are all here helping and more are coming tomorrow. Have a great night. Just wanted to let ya'll know what is happening. Will keep ya'll informed of what happens in our meetings. Am missing Honey Bandit and the rest of the crew like crazy. I know Matt is taking perfect care of him, but it is still a very big deal to be this far away. But it is a small world Leslie (Peeples) is a friend of my little sister Tami's in Washington. :) p www.chillypepper.weebly.com Chilly Pepper / Honey Bandit 30027 State Hwy 44 East Shingletown, CA 96088 530 339 1458 474 5197 Well, this is the big one. The first time away from Honey Bandit for any length of time. PTL my hubby will still be sleeping with him in case he gets stuck.
Honey Bandit has been blossoming. He is picking up a lot of coltish behavior. He loves to "pretend" to be scared of stuff. I know some of it is real, but you can tell walking him out to play that he is looking for any excuse. He arches his neck, prances and flips his tail high in the air. I think he knows that he is amazing. Had a scare yesterday because he had been coughing every once in awhile and then had a snotty nose. He did enjoy getting us all gross when Channel 24/12 was here. I think he has a little crush on Elizabeth (Gadley), the reporter that came to do the story. He absolutely loved her. They did a nice little blip on him on the news last night. The link is:http://www.khsltv.com/content/localnews/story/Shingletown-Woman-Who-Rescued-Horse-is-Bringing/q5NZWHyGGEaQYleNCErrmQ.cspx. Honey Bandit is quite the little ham. I was worried about him getting a cold right when I was supposed to leave. So far it looks like it was just "allergies?", as he is feeling fine today. We appreciate your support in this endeavor, as the timing is crucial. I am so glad that his story is going to stay alive, as he deserves that. After all, he is America's Poster Boy to Stop the Round-ups! Funny how life has been so crazy since we got him. You can never tell what will happen next, but I know that we need to "cowgirl up", no matter what it takes and "git er done". Thank you to those who are helping us with this latest endeavor. If you'd like to help, remember it is all tax deductible and it takes all of us to make this happen. :) Take care and God Bless. Please pray that everything goes smoothly. Thank you, Honey Bandit and the Gang! www.chillypepper.weebly.com Chilly Pepper - Miracle Mustang 30027 State Hwy 44 East Shingletown, CA 96088 530 474 5197 p.s. Thank you auntie Nona for the fabulous blanket. Can't wait til he grows into it. (probably tomorrow - ha ha) Hi ya'll
It's been a couple of days since the last update. Honey Bandit is starting to get more energy. Not all of the time, but definitely more than before. :) He runs and prances and makes it very clear that he is something special. With his head up high and his tail flowing behind him, dancing over that cute little butt, he is stepping out and making waves. He still manages to get cast nearly every day/night. However, in spite of banking the walls and trying all sorts of different situations, the only thing we have found out for sure is this. PAYBACK CAN BE A REAL BUMMER....... DaBubbles has decided to send a message loud and clear. However, we are not sure which message he is sending. DaBubbles was trapped several times between HB and the wall. He was quite frightened, and rightfully so. His position was precarious to say the least. He is also the one that gets pushed around the most, being he is about a third of the other's size. So, the last time HB was cast, DaBubbles stepped right up to the plate. He very gently (ha ha) leaned over and bit Honey Bandit over and over in various places. Was he encouraging HB to get up, trying to "help him", OR Was he getting his payback. I have to say that at one point it was very clear that HB was physically unable to get up. That would be about the time that DaBubbles took a rather large mouthful of HB's skin right around his groin area. I have no doubt that HB would have jumped up in a flash if he could. It was cute though, because DaBubbles really didn't bite very hard. That is what makes you wonder, which is it really, payback or "assistance" to help him get up. Once again the horses can teach us a lesson. No matter what the inspiration for all the "bites', there was really no real malice involved. Too bad we all couldn't play so nicely together, even when we are "getting back at someone". HB is growing like crazy. Not too long ago, we had measured him for a new blanket. He was 51 inches from the middle of his chest back to his tail. Only a little over a month has passed and his measurements are more like 55/56. He outgrew his beautiful blanket. (I am sure that we will have another foal soon to wear it though, so it wo'n' ever "go to waste".) He is taller and gaining pounds quickly. He definitely has some more attitude. I forget he isn't like Chilly Pepper. She was only 3 days old when we rescued her, but Honey Bandit (according to BLM's best guess) was 6 weeks old. So he had 6 weeks of living in the wild, learning to be a wild horse. Sometimes it is surprising to me when that behavior sneaks out. But that is awesome, because that means more and more of his brain/memory is coming back. We are looking into "anti-cast rollers". Please contact me if you have any experience with these. I talked to the vet today and he said he has heard of them but is not sure if he would be comfortable with them or not, as he has never used them. So I would appreciate any info you might have. For those of you (like me) who don't know what an "anti-cast roller" is, it is a device that you strap around the horse's girth, and it has a big ring on the top which prevents the horses from rolling all the way over. I finally got my email addresses re-entered, and am hoping that I have all of Honey Bandit's friends back in his group. If you know anyone who is "missing" their email updates, please have them contact me at Palomino.honeybandit @gmail. God bless and thank you for all your help.
